Sample Collection Best Practices for Accurate Results
Why Sample Collection Matters
Even the most advanced testing technology cannot overcome poor sample collection practices. Proper sampling techniques are essential for obtaining representative, uncontaminated samples that yield accurate results.
Essential Collection Guidelines
Timing and Frequency
For wastewater surveillance, collect samples during peak flow periods to ensure representative sampling. Composite samples collected over 24 hours often provide the most comprehensive data.
Container Selection
Use only sterile, certified containers provided in our sampling kits. Never reuse containers, as contamination from previous samples can compromise results.
Volume Requirements
Collect at least 150mL of sample to ensure sufficient volume for testing and potential retesting if needed. Overfilling containers can lead to leakage during shipping.
Temperature Control
Keep samples refrigerated at 2-8°C immediately after collection. Use ice packs during shipping to maintain temperature. Samples that warm significantly may show degraded DNA and reduced pathogen detectability.
Documentation
Accurate labeling and chain-of-custody documentation are critical. Include collection date, time, location, and collector name on all samples.
Shipping
Ship samples within 24 hours of collection using overnight delivery. Our prepaid return shipping labels ensure proper handling and temperature maintenance during transit.
